As the INIC-3637EN is an MC9S08N08 chip, it requires at least two transistors, and therefore the USB controller also has to have some kind of protection against electrostatic discharge. Otherwise your flash drive would be very fragile. This USB controller is not packaged in plastic but is soldered onto the PCB (unlike most USB controllers), and therefore has a higher risk to fail. The customer information on the plastic case is misleading, because the flash drive is shipped without a USB cable and without additional driver software. Additional cables and drivers are most probably required for the described hardware, as different operating systems (like Windows 8) do not directly recognize the hardware. It is also possible to setup the controller via the powerline-communication as explained in the next paragraph. In the powerline-communcation, the USB controller only needs a few ~$100 for build-in resistors, and therefore it is possible to build a cheap back-up solution for your data.
The added transistors, as well as the power-drivers, can be used for the automatic setup of the USB controller via the powerline-communication. You do not need to use more expensive USB-cables, and you can therefore reuse the power-drivers and the transistors easily as the USB controllers can be soldered directly onto the powerline bus. The chip can be programmed within minutes, and you do not need a special software. The USB controllers are built in the matrix of the chip, and therefore need no external power. The firmware of the USB controllers is easy to sniff, as the PINs are visible in the devices status register.
