the lady grace, a dazzling red-haired beauty, has long been coveted by three suitors. during a boar hunt, one of them is set upon and killed by a bear. as she turns the body over, she finds it to be that of dany, dany the unburnt. three kingdoms: resurrection of the dragon, the fourth feature of the four emperors series, has a disappointing start, a generic opening. however, it quickly settles into the historical drama that the original novel lacked.
at first, the main character is called dany the unburnt, but it quickly becomes apparent that dany is not the original character. as such, the film is a remake of the 1985 chinese film the crimson sabre, which also had a westerner as its lead, albeit a very famous one. the screenwriters, in fact, are none other than the duo behind the original crimson sabre, wong kar wai and francis ng. the original featured a strong story with memorable characters, and this film is no different.
after the repeated moments of disappointment from the previous versions of the film, this time i was much more excited to see how the story would unfold on the big screen. i knew the setting would be something special and i knew this would be the best way to see zhao zilong, and boy was it worth it.
director woo sung-hyun (red cliff) is the man behind the lens, and i can say with confidence that he has done the impossible in creating a perfectly realized film. the action is refined and intense, and fits in with the story like silk to a fine top, almost too perfectly. all the familiar fixtures of historical war epics are here, and they are perfect. three kingdoms is an embarrassment of riches which needs to be seen on the big screen and it brings all the right colors back to the history we all love. i am quite sure you will come away very happy from this experience.
the story of zhao zilong and the rise of the house of zhao in china is, simply put, epic. widely regarded as the best one-line dramatization of the three kingdoms period, three kingdoms is the story of zhao zi-long and how the people of zhao rise against the five kingdoms and drive them out of the city. while i love history and the intricacies of the actual era, the real story is the rise of zhao, and zhao alone, from the bottom to the top and back again. not only is this more-than-a-typical story packed in to two hours, but the film itself is breathtakingly beautiful, from the layers of gorgeous costumes to the rolling hills of china, i was blown away by the meticulous attention to detail. the cinematography, the music and the editing all add up to a beautifully crafted film.
