RahXephon will continue the story begun in Starship Engineers, the anime adaptation of RahXephon: Great Creators of the Winged Dragons, the 1991 anime film directed by Hiroshi Hosokawa. Also known as RahXephon, the original TV series was created by Koichi Kurata, produced by Tatsunoko Production and broadcast on TV Tokyo from July 2000 to July 2003.
In Starship Engineers, in 2004, Kasumi was accepted into University with a contract to study medicine. After graduating, she went to a medical research facility, investigating a rare disease affecting women. There, she discovered that the disease originated on Seschwitz Island, off the coast of Japan. Her research also brought her into contact with Hinamori, a distant relative of RahXephon and a renowned scientist.
Through RahXephon, it became known that the original Greek god of war and rebirth, Ares, was born on Seschwitz Island in the nineteenth century.
Maki Tajima (Toradora, Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers) is directing the series, while Jumpei Nakatsu (Kujō-sama is Coming!, Ingrid, Kidō Monster) is in charge of the series scripts and Yuuko Yahiro (Phantom – The Requiem of the Soul, RahXephon, Super Sentai) is designing the characters. The producers are Genzo Kitazawa, Kenji Nagasaki and Hiroshi Kobayashi, and the main music producers are Kenji Kawai (Gundam SEED, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED), Takayuki Tada (Gundam SEED, Magnum TA: Unlimited) and Eriko Matsuda (RahXephon, Sagura).
The first DVD boxset of RahXephon will ship on October 2, 2013, while the first Blu-ray boxset will ship on November 26, 2013. A Blu-ray Disc (BD) boxset will ship on March 25, 2014.
