Only six years after Glen Bell established Taco Bell, John Turner, a survivor of the Korean War, established Taco John’s. Taco Bell was created by Glen Bell (originally called Taco House). If there is one thing that can convince you of the authenticity of the food served at Taco John’s, it is the fact that the founder of the chain, Turner, received the idea for it while he was still working there at McDonald’s. This fact alone should convince you that the food served is authentic. But authenticity was not a problem at the early Taco John’s locations, which tended to crop up in rural regions of the Midwest that had either no Mexican restaurants at all or very few of them. Along with the overwhelming majority of the large “Mexican” fast-food chains in the United States, Taco Cabana was neither founded in Mexico nor by a Mexican national. This is also true of the majority of these other chains. On the other hand, it was founded in the 1970s in San Antonio, Texas, which is geographically and psychologically closer to Mexico than Cheyenne, Wyoming. Qdoba cultivated a cult following despite being in the shadow of its more financially successful competition, Chipotle, even though it was established around the same time as Chipotle and in the exact location (Denver in the early 1990s).
The fact that Qdoba is superior to Chipotle in various ways is common knowledge among customers of both restaurants. In contrast to Chipotle, Qdoba does not impose additional fees for including queso and guacamole its customers. And while most people thought Chipotle’s version of queso was a dismal failure, the traditional queso at Qdoba has been praised for its velvety texture and smoky flavour for a long time. And while Chipotle is struggling with menu exhaustion, Qdoba is keeping things fresh with a menu that offers a greater variety of choices, including tacos, taco salads, burrito bowls, nachos, soups, and even breakfast at participating locations.
