In 1959 she published a landmark paper that described how organisms respond collectively to environmental stressors such as crowding or pollution by releasing secondary metabolites that can neutralize or expel unwelcome invaders. Between 1961 and 1965, Katsura chaired the International Union for Conservation of Nature Forestry Section Working Party on Plant Diversity, which helped lay the foundation for modern tree conservation techniques.
