Masako Katsura’s Background

Masako Katsura was born in Tokyo, Japan, on December 31, 1928. She is best known for her work with Emperor Naruhito and Crown Prince Takachiho. Masako Katsura began her career as a fashion model in the 1950s. In 1963, she began working as an interpreter and advisor to Emperor Naruhito. From 1969-1971 she served as a Cabinet secretary in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Eisaku Sato. From 1973-1977 she served as an ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, and The Netherlands. In 1986, Masako Katsura was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work on behalf of human rights in East Timor. She passed away on October 3, 2018, at 88.

Completion of her mission

Masako Katsura, the first Japanese woman of a royal family to receive a Ph.D. in forestry from the University of Edinburgh, died on September 25 at 91. Katsura was also a research associate at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study and has been awarded many prestigious international distinctions for her scientific work.

Born into an aristocratic family in Japan in 1924, Katsura gained considerable knowledge about forestry while studying at Cambridge and Edinburgh universities. Her dissertation on forest regeneration earned her a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh in 1951. Two years later, she married Prince Takachiho, who would later become Naruhito, the emperor of Japan. The following year, she gave birth to their only child—a daughter—and returned to Japan to take up her post as a research associate at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study.

Katsura’s work focused on plant regulation and plant defense mechanisms. In 1959 she published a landmark paper that described how organisms respond collectively to environmental stressors such as crowding or pollution by releasing secondary metabolites that can neutralize or expel unwelcome invaders. Between 1961 and 1965, Katsura chaired the International Union for Conservation of Nature Forestry Section Working Party on Plant Diversity, which helped lay the foundation for modern tree conservation techniques.

Katsura was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976 “for her significant contributions to resolving conflict through peaceful means.” She continued to work after receiving the prize, serving as President of UNESCO’s Japanese delegation

The Katsura Clan’s Legacy Today

He currently serves as President of the Aichi Prefecture Association for Promotion of Scientific Studies and co-chairs the Asian Development Bank’s Commission on Governance and Sustainable Development.

Katsura’s work in diplomacy continued with her appointment as Japan’s ambassador to Germany in 1992.
