How can we reconcile our growing technological knowledge with this conscience? We must build societies adapted to a sustainable future. This means that peaceful and just relationships must be established in our world.
163. The United Nations is regarded as the most important instrument for establishing and maintaining a common strategy and a common policy on earth. One of the areas of intervention which must be taken into consideration is that of preserving the environment in which mankind develops.
166. Let me conclude with a brief reflection on what is at stake with respect to the environment. The recognition of God as the Creator means that we are also accountable to him, and we are in a position to do justice to him by ensuring that earth remains a dwelling for other beings. We have absolute duties towards creation and our limitations in the eyes of the Creator should inspire us with respect for our responsibilities and the compassion which should command us to take care of our planet. We are accountable before our Lord and we must respond morally. Social and economic solidarity must be a decisive factor, given that we all depend on our environment for our lives. If, as a result of human activities, the environment is degraded, not only of our planet but of neighboring worlds, the prospects of humanity, and even the very survival of mankind, are put in question. Knowing that we are mortal, and aware of our limited time on earth, we must do our best to safeguard the environment for future generations. When the environment is destroyed by the indiscriminate pollution of our time, its flora and its fauna, or the plundering of its resources and its use, not only our earth but our future will be less affluent.
