the sandbox kids unit was created to promote learning opportunities for kids and educate parents through content, videos and other channels. its now home to the other apps and platforms sandbox owns, like curious world and hopster. sandbox kids unit will also operate as a free app that connects with apple tv and the apple news app to offer notifications about how much time kids spend on their devices.
the new unit also offers a weekly report of the apps and time kids spend on them, which could help parents learn more about their kids. it also will provide suggestions for more apps and services based on what kids have used.sandbox has also launched a parental control feature for the ios app that could be rolled out to android and web apps in the future.
sandbox says it already reaches 55 million children and millennials through its 13 brands, which include smartworld, a shopping and on-demand streaming service with over 1,000 handpicked mobile games and more than 7,000 indie titles. but schwartzenberg says the new unit is aimed at taking that reach to new heights. when asked how it will impact the company, she says, “we remain extremely committed to building safe, entertaining, and educational platforms for the next generation.”
an app store for kids, parents and teachers will officially launch later this year with a rebranding of the sandbox kids unit. the company says it expects to announce additional details about licensing agreements and partnerships in the near future, including those for content partnerships.
sandbox’s other brands include the teen digital game publisher clevertouch, the the kids network that offers news and information for families and a the teacher app that helps teachers deliver engaging content to kids.
